Every M. Night Shyamalan Movie Ranked Worst To Best

9. Wide Awake (1998)

Signs Mel Gibson

Wide Awake is Shyamalan's Music of the Heart -- a film so obviously out of place in his filmography it's fair to assume it's one of his weaker efforts. And whilst this is certainly true, it's not entirely fair, either.

Though oddly pieced together with a mismatched tone and blunt attempts to tug at the ol' heartstrings, the drama's exploration of a young boy (Joseph Cross) who struggles to comprehend the mystery of mortality is quite sweet when Shyamalan slows down to focus on it.

No, it's not particularly well-made or memorable (aside from being such an oddity in his career), but Cross, Rosie O'Donnell and its message of making life count keeps it ticking along just enough to save it from total failure.
