When Thanos sent Gamora to retrieve the Orb for him from Xandar, she saw the opportunity to make her escape. Using the units she would make from selling the Infinity Stone to the Collector, she could get as far away from her adoptive father as possible.

However, no matter how much she dreaded it, or ran from it, her destiny still arrived. She was brought face to face with the Mad Titan after he stole the Reality Stone from Taneleer Tivan, and was taken to help find for him the elusive Soul Stone.

Initially, it was just her knowledge of the gem that Thanos wanted, and he didn’t go to Vormir with the intention of hurling his favourite daughter off the cliff to her death, but this is what stood in between him and his own destiny. He killed her without hesitation.

Gamora’s realization that Thanos did love her, and what that meant for her, was simply heartbreaking, and seeing her corpse lay at the foot of the sheer drop was difficult to look at. There is a different version of Gamora potentially somewhere in the universe right now, but this version never left Vormir.
