Despite being a huge part of both the Thor franchise, and the wider MCU as a whole, before his own Disney+ series Loki spent less than two hours on screen since 2011. His series of the same name allowed the exploration of his character like never before, but it still couldn’t provide a greater moment for the character than when he stood up to Thanos.

After the Mad Titan attacked the surviving Asgardian ship, killed Heimdall and many of the passengers, and almost did the same to Thor and Hulk, Loki tried to end his conquest there and then with one of his blades.

This was arguably the moment Loki truly announced himself as a hero in the MCU, as he but himself in danger for the good of something other than his own self interests. Ultimately however, he was stopped by Thanos' newly acquired Infinity Stone.

Loki had ‘died’ on several occasions before this in the franchise, but there were no resurrections this time. Thanos snapped the rightful King of Jotunheim’s neck, and in one swift move both ended the life of one of the franchise’s most popular characters, and truly announced himself as a threat to the MCU.
