6. Avengers Infinity War - The Red Skull Survived

There wasn't really any intel on the Red Skull making a return, only speculation. He touched the Tesseract, he went bye bye, but we never saw him die. Go figure! But the real surprise was that the big comeback would occur smack-bang in the middle of Infinity War, when people were least expecting it.

Time had passed, a lot of time, and the Red Skull was a different beast. He'd shed his totalitarian quest for world domination, and became a much wiser but equally sinister ghoulish guardian of the most hard to get of all infinity stones. It was a hearty nod to long term fans and, from a narrative angle, worked with surprising neatness.

What was even more striking, was that on that initial reveal, it was virtually impossible to tell if the character was played by Hugo Weaving or not. Despite it being a different actor, the look and the voice was so authentic, that we really didn't know better. Within an epic movie rife with shock moments, this was one of the less significant, but was still a great way to instigate dumbfounded gawks midway into the film.
