It was never in doubt that James Cameron's sequel would be a visually stunning sequel, but as a follow-up 13 years in the making, would it land with the same tectonic wow factor as its predecessor?

The answer, mostly, is a resounding yes. Watched in IMAX 3D, Avatar: The Way of Water ranks among the most mesmerising cinematic experiences you're ever likely to have.

Though Cameron's plotting isn't nearly as satisfying or interesting as his world-building, he puts considerably more effort into the characterisation this time around.

It's a genuine joy to be introduced to Jake (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri's (Zoe Saldana) family - kids who, shockingly enough, aren't remotely annoying.

It wears its themes on its sleeve and touts its fair share of dopey dialogue, but the sheer overwhelming bombast of Cameron's ground-breaking vision makes it one of the most mesmerising sequels - nay, films - of the last 12 months.
