Expectations weren't exactly through the roof for Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, a sequel to a film released over a decade ago, and one which few can remember much of at all.

It felt like the time had passed for Puss in Boots, but then this movie came out and shocked just about everyone.

First and foremost, The Last Wish is a genuinely well written story about existence and mortality, accentuated by the legitimately bone-chilling presence of the villainous Wolf (Wagner Moura) who serves as a personification of Death.

Beyond that, the voice acting is terrific, and perhaps best of all the animation is sublime, opting for an entirely different, vastly superior aesthetic to the first.
