Every Martin Scorsese Film Ranked Worst To Best
13. Shutter Island (2010)
Scorsese has always experimented with genre, but Shutter Island remains one of the more surprising additions to his career.
Leonardo DiCaprio stars as Teddy Daniels, a US Marshall who is sent with his partner (Mark Ruffalo) to a psychiatric facility on the titular island, where a dangerous patient has managed to escape their room and flee the grounds. There, though, things begin to fall apart, and Teddy must come face-to-face with his own twisted mental state.
Shutter Island is a startling achievement in tension and how to create a gloomy atmosphere. As the mysteries surrounding Teddy mount, so too do the clues about what's really going on.
An unrelenting psychological thriller grounded by fantastic turns from DiCaprio, Ruffalo and Ben Kingsley, the film shifts tones in its final moments to become a tear-jerking tragedy. Horrible, twisting and without remorse, Shutter Island is an intelligent horror with one of the greatest twists in modern cinema, and is easily one of Scorsese's finest achievements.
