Every Martin Scorsese Film Ranked Worst To Best
14. Casino (1995)
Casino has spent over two decades being compared to Goodfellas, which came out to rave reviews five years earlier. It's easy to see why too: both focussed on the ins-and-outs of organised crime, and starred Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci as the film's morally ambiguous leads.
But it's nothing like its predecessor, really. Sure, it's about crime and how it definitely doesn't pay in the end, but its scope is larger and its tone noticeably bleaker.
Whilst Goodfellas looks at life in the mob, Casino looks at the life of the mob in Las Vegas, allowing for some dazzling set pieces and even more sleazy, dangerous dealings than ever before.
De Niro brings the fury as gangster and casino boss Ace Rothstein, and though Pesci seems to be doing his damnedest to outdo his Oscar-winning role in Goodfellas, the true star of the show has to be Sharon Stone, who plays hustler Ginger McKenna with a level of intimidation and cunning that rivals the hard-faced men around her.
Casino is much more than a follow-up to Goodfellas, and it's about time we realised that.
