Every Martin Scorsese Film Ranked Worst To Best
9. The Departed (2006)
Martin Scorsese and Jack Nicholson - what else needs to be said?
A remake of 2002's Infernal Affairs, The Departed was the film that finally won Scorsese his long overdue Best Director Oscar. And with such a grisly, pitch perfect script and an unblemished ensemble led by Nicholson, Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Mark Wahlberg, Vera Farmiga, Alec Baldwin and Martin Sheen, it's easy to see why.
The drama is a thrilling game of hide and seek, as young mobster Colin (Damon) is sent by crime boss Frank Costello (Nicholson) to infiltrate the Massachusetts State Police. Meanwhile, undercover cop Billy (DiCaprio) is sent to spy on Costello and his operations.
With a tense write-up like that, The Departed delivers with every sneering Nicholson monologue and every close call between rival moles Billy and Colin.
As the film moves on - feeling decidedly shorter than its two-and-a-half hour runtime - the lines between good and bad become more and more blurred, and the final act erupts into a perfect series of violent plot twists.
