Every Martin Scorsese Film Ranked Worst To Best
10. The Aviator (2004)
Following their so-so team-up with Gangs of New York, Martin Scorsese cast Leonardo DiCaprio in one of his best roles - that of titular aviator Howard Hughes, a brilliant man whose life was continuously challenged by severe OCD and increasing paranoia.
The Aviator feels like could only have been made by Scorsese. It's a striking analysis of a man who lived a great but all too brief life, moving between moments of thrilling action and quiet tragedy as only Scorsese can achieve. And DiCaprio is there, matching the director's intensity and drive with every scene.
Alongside DiCaprio, there is large and spotless ensemble working wonders to make the movie even more enthralling, but the best supporting player is an Oscar-winning Cate Blanchett, who plays fellow Oscar darling Katharine Hepburn with grace and humour.
The Aviator is an emotional affair, but also one of great heart and understanding, and between the sublime performances and the technical achievements of the film's flying scenes, it's one of Scorsese's most captivating spectacles.
