Every Martin Scorsese Movie Ranked Worst To Best
26. New York Stories (1989)
New York Stories makes for an interesting exercise: What if the three most accomplished directors of their generation - Scorsese, Coppola and Allen - teamed-up for a movie in three parts, each of them bringing their own story to the table?
Of the short films, Scorsese's is effortlessly the best, following an artist (Nick Nolte) whose art is fuelled by untamed desire. "Life Lessons" is passionately made, though it's also unsettling given the way Nolte's artist treats the women in his life, without comeuppance for his abusive behaviour.
Still, it finds Scorsese working his magic, and despite the obvious thematic flaws remains infinitely stronger than the slight, wonky vignettes of Coppola and Allen.
