Every Martin Scorsese Movie Ranked Worst To Best
25. The Colour Of Money (1993)
The most mainstream and easily digestible of Scorsese's movies, The Color of Money feels, at times, like it could have been made by anyone. He's not asleep at the wheel, but you get the sense he can't wait to get out of there.
A sequel to the 1961 classic The Hustler, the film follows pool player Fast Eddie (an Oscar-winning Paul Newman, cool and commanding) as he takes a fellow player (a cocky Tom Cruise) under his wing. What follows is wonderfully fun, predictable and charming, though it never becomes much more than a lively popcorn movie.
This is Scorsese at his most laidback and detached, working wonders with a fired-up cast but never straining himself to create something more. Yes, it's spirited good fun, which is perfectly fine, but it's odd to see Scorsese play things so safe.
