8. Shutter Island (2010)

Martin Scorsese Films Ranked
Paramount

Under any other director, Shutter Island would have been a throwaway thriller quickly forgotten. An adaptation of the Dennis Lehane book of the same name, it tells the story of two US Marshals (Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo) who uncover more than they intended during their newest investigation.

Set on an island housing a controversial psychiatric hospital, Shutter Island is a methodical game of cat-and-mouse soaked in rain and encased in darkness. Gothic and macabre, it doubles as a ferocious whodunit and a horrible exploration of guilt, memory and atonement.

Alongside the visuals, it's DiCaprio who you'll remember long after its unsettling last twist, his desperation and eventual heartbreak a stunning character study impossible to fault. He complements Shutter Island's growing sense of dread with every cruel bolt from the blue he endures - and that we, stunned, must endure with him.
