1. Spider-Man 2

Spider-Man 2 isn't just the best Marvel movie ever made, it's probably a good contender for the best superhero movie ever made. it might not be as grown up as The Dark Knight but it has more heart and more universal appeal and even more than a decade on it doesn't feel at all dated.

Having already done all of the establishing work in the original, Sam Raimi was able to really flex his story-telling muscles, adding complexity to Tobey Maguire's excellent performance as Peter Parker and introducing one of the best comic book movie villains ever in the shape of Alfred Molina's tragic Doctor Octopus.

Spider-Man 2 does everything you'd want from a sequel, progressing themes established in the original, developing the characters - particularly Peter and MJ - and added a bigger sense of immediate threat. And it achieved that intimate growth of Peter with a lot of other subplots to juggle in a way that makes the failures of its follow-up even more frustrating.
