Even though the trailer for The Matrix gave the impression the film would be fight scenes from start-to-finish, we had to wait almost an hour before seeing the famous "I know kung fu" battle.

Thankfully, the face off between Morpheus and Neo was worth the wait. Watching Keanu Reeves and Laurence Fishburne execute every move, deflection, and counter with precision and fluidity made jaws drop back in 1999.

To prepare, Reeves and Fishburne assumed they'd be training for several weeks. In reality, their fighting choreographer, Woo-Ping Yuen, had them train for five months!

However, all of Fishburne and Reeves' hard work would've been for nought if the scene wasn't shot well. Many potentially great fights have been ruined by shaky-cam, bad lighting, and excessive quick cuts.

Yuen stated that the key to shooting great action is to find the best angle for every "set" and then shoot as many moves as possible from that angle with a steady camera. He worried that cuts break the flow of a fight and so, only used them when necessary.

Matrix fans are eternally grateful for Yuen's work and philosophy since the franchise would've never been as popular as it was if it wasn't for him.
