Every MCU Director's Best Film (NOT In The MCU)
3. Taika Waititi - What We Do In The Shadows
To be honest, nobody really cared about the third Thor movie when it was announced. But excitement started to manifest when it was revealed that New Zealand-born filmmaker Taika Waititi was onboard to direct.
With Thor: Ragnorak, Waititi breathed new life into the God of Thunder and, much like the Russos with Captain America, he turned Thor into a crowd favourite overnight. Waititi fully embraced the comic zaniness of the source material, injecting Ragnorak with as much colour, humour and pulp as possible.
Picking his best film was not easy. Boy and Hunt for the Wilderpeople definitely deserve some love. Jojo Rabbit gets an honourable mention, especially for earning Waititi his first Oscar for Adapted Screenplay, as well as receiving five other nominations including Best Picture. However, one cannot ignore the movie that really put him on the map and landed him the Ragnorak job: What We Do in the Shadows.
Co-written, co-directed and co-starring Jermaine Clement, it is impossible to state in just a short paragraph everything that makes this mockumentary following a group of vampires so damn good. Brilliant performances, tight writing and endlessly quotable, What We Do in the Shadows takes full advantage of its incredible premise and never ceases to put a smile on your face.
If you haven’t already, please give this one a watch. You won’t regret it.
