Every MCU Director's Best Film (NOT In The MCU)

4. Jon Watts - Cop Car

Chef 2014
Park Pictures

In integrating Spider-Man into the MCU and successfully rebooting a character that had already had five movies in the 15 years prior, Jon Watts may well have done the most underrated job of all the directors to date.

General audiences were already a little tired of the web slinger after Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield hung up their web-shooters, so there was cautious expectation for yet another Spider-Man outing, even if he was part of The Avengers now.

Yet Watts and co. pulled off an incredible feat, delivering not one but two great Spidey films in Homecoming and Far From Home. Perfect casting, hilarious dialogue and with two of the franchise’s best villains, they feel fresh and new, yet still retain the core of what makes the friendly neighbourhood superhero so popular. Such has been their success, Watts has returned for the third entry in the series and has also been selected to reboot the Fantastic Four into the MCU.

You would think, given how funny his Spider-Man films are, that Watt’s film background is in comedy, like most of the other directors on this list. Yet the only other features on his filmography are as far removed from the genre as you can get.

His debut Clown (2014) is a bloody but underwhelming horror and Cop Car is no laughing matter either. Two juveniles get a lot more than they bargained for when they steal a cop car belonging to a ruthless Sheriff (Kevin Bacon).

While by no means perfect, Cop Car is still an extremely tense thriller, anchored by a scene stealing Bacon and terrific performances from young actors James Freedson-Jackson and Hays Wellford.
