Every MCU Movie - Ranked From Worst To Best
1. Guardians Of The Galaxy
Despite Civil War's extremely pressing claim for the top spot, it's James Gunn's charming, hilarious sci-fi that emerges a worthy winner.
I'll admit that when Guardians was announced, I wasn't exactly inspired: the comic book was an oddity, the characters were strange and wildly at odds with the rest of the MCU and the actors involved weren't entirely exciting (this was before Chris Pratt was crowned God of Hollywood). How wrong I was.
Strengths
The cast is incredibly well built, not just in terms of individual performances, but also in the chemistry they build. Who would have thought that a wrestler, a comedian, Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper playing a raccoon would work so perfectly together? (Obviously there weren't any concerns over Zoe Saldana when she was cast).
The strength of the movie is all about shattering expectations: every single one of the characters turns out to have something soft and heartening beneath their hardened outer shell, and that heart is what unites them. And for all the humour and the excellent action sequences, it is also heart that makes Guardians stand head and shoulders above its fellow MCU members.
The franchise had seen nothing as devastating as Star-Lord's personal history, or Drax's grief-inspired rage, or Rocket's emotional and psychological wounds, or Groot's sacrifice. And this is a film about space pirates, a talking raccoon and a giant tree-man. Gunn is a bloody genius.
And by God that soundtrack is amazing.
Weaknesses
Ronan isn't really the best villain, and he's made to look an absolute mug by the end. But as faults go, that's hardly a big one.
