13. Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)

One of the many joys of watching the MCU is how many subgenres each of the films incorporate into their stories. The Ant-Man films play like heist thrillers, Thor like a fantasy epic, and Spider-Man like a coming-of-age action-comedy.

Captain America follows this trend, with The First Avenger not just being the pitch perfect origin story of one of Marvel's most recognisable heroes, but a genuinely thrilling war movie with glorious set pieces, era-specific costumes and historical plot devices.

Chris Evans is perfectly cast as the morally incorruptible super soldier, and watching him do battle with Hugo Weaving's vicious villain Red Skull whilst falling for Hayley Atwell's tough-as-nails Agent Carter helps make The First Avenger one of the MCU's most vibrant and emotional instalments.
