Tom Holland's brief appearance in Civil War ramped up the anticipation for a solo Spider-Man film like never before, even though some were still apprehensive given the failure of the last Andrew Garfield-led movie not three years earlier.

Dropping the origin story, skipping the exposition and throwing audiences head-first into the action, Homecoming shed the structure of its predecessors and in the process gave birth to the best Spidey film since Sam Raimi defied expectations with 2004's Spider-Man 2.

Brilliantly integrating itself into the wider MCU backstory thanks to the presence of Iron Man, and chilling audiences with Michael Keaton's scene-stealing villain Vulture, Homecoming found its feet from the very first scene, and serves as not just a fun little solo adventure, but a genuinely affecting coming-of-age comedy-drama which feels both fresh and relatable.
