Every Michael Mann Movie Ranked Worst To Best

9. Miami Vice (2006)

Heat Al Pacino
Universal

As noted in the introduction, Michael Mann got his start writing for TV, and Miami Vice gave him his big break. He wrote for the show for six years, and once he had a strong footing in Hollywood, he decided to return to his roots by making a movie reboot of the series.

Visually, Miami Vice is slick, the action is thrilling and the aesthetic moody and cool. Also, despite its typically long runtime for a Mann picture, its story moves quickly and it's easy to slip and out of when you're after a breezy, leave-your-brain-at-the-door action caper.

Unfortunately, its flaws are glaring and derail Mann's otherwise exquisite tone control and pacing. The biggest issue is Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx, who play detectives Crockett and Tubbs respectively and lack the necessary energy to bring the iconic duo to life.

Their characters are bland despite the source material, and you can't help but think Mann was more interested in the way the film looked than how it truly honoured the original series and its characters. There's sparks of brilliance there, but the inconsistencies let it down massively.
