Every Michael Mann Movie Ranked Worst To Best
5. The Last Of The Mohicans (1992)
Though as an historical war epic it's something of a left-field addition to Mann's filmography, The Last of the Mohicans is easily the director's most visually stunning film, put together with sweeping battle shots, beautiful long takes courtesy of cinematographer Dante Spinotti, and enough high-octane action to cover up the film's patchy approach to historical accuracy.
Based on James Fenimore Cooper's book of the same name, the drama takes place just before the War of Independence and finds Mohican scouts led by Hawkeye (Daniel Day-Lewis) protecting the daughter (Madeline Stowe) of a British officer (Maurice Roƫves).
Despite occasionally losing its touch with some forced, cliched romance, The Last of the Mohicans is a riveting historical drama, one that plays loose with its history but makes for a great war picture all the same.
Also, it goes without saying that Day-Lewis is on top form as the film's complex and troubled leading man, providing yet another rich and compelling role to his immaculate CV.
