Every Mission Impossible Villain Ranked From Worst To Best

12. Hugh Stamp - MI:2

The likes of Hugo Weaving in the Matrix trilogy and Richard Roxburgh in this film were amongst those Aussies who benefitted from the swathe of Hollywood films in the late 90's and early 00's that were filmed down under. With lead man Tom Cruise married to Aussie girl Nicole Kidman at the time of filming for MI2, shooting for the movie moved to Sydney, which made the casting of quality Australian acting talent a smart and logical move.

Unfortunately the role of henchman Hugh Stamp proves a complete waste of Roxburgh's talents, effectively standing in the background with the odd withering gaze and questioning of his boss's actions. A scene in which his superior Sean Ambrose cuts off his finger for insubordination is probably his best scene, although it proves more character development for Ambrose than Stamp. His death scene is also handled well, although the over dramatic score signifying that he has been accidentally killed by Ambrose undoes a bit of the impact.

All in all Hugh Stamp is a rather forgettable figure in a rather forgettable movie, which like the whole movie is considerably lacking in depth. Giving Stamp his own sequence fighting one of the less senior members of the IMF team could have helped develop the character and the film, as this was one film that missed the point of a Mission Impossible film, focussing too much on Ethan Hunt as a solo act.

While he likes to know himself as the 'thunder from down under', Luke is actually just a big dork who loves all things sport, film, James Bond, Doctor Who and Karaoke. With all the suave and sophistication of any Aussie half way through a slab, Luke will critique every minute detail of films and shows from all eras- unless it's 1990's Simpsons episodes, because they're just perfect
