Every Mission Impossible Villain Ranked From Worst To Best

10. Sean Ambrose - MI:2

It may be a little harsh to have this character so far down the list, but the film and the character left so little impact that it was hard to justify a higher ranking. Dougray Scott gave up the role of Wolverine for this mediocre project, which goes down as one of the poorer career choices ever made by an actor.

To be fair to Scott he does everything he can to bring Sean Ambrose's villainy to the fore, a real sense of joy present in each of his character's wicked acts. The script also gives the character a few deliciously dark moments, from the effective execution of a plane full of passengers, the severing of a finger of his right hand man and the injection of a virus into his former lover. His overall plan is quite decent in villainy terms, utilising a deadly virus in an effort to profit from the sales of the vaccine.

Unfortunately John Woo's direction is so ham-fisted that it undoes most of these good moments, the overuse of slow motion and over dramatic music making the whole event same quite lame. It would have been interesting to see Sean Ambrose in a better film, and one wonders if he would have been a better choice of villain than Jim Phelps in the first entry. With the material he is given here though, Scott just can't lift this character to any great heights.
