Every Mitchell And Webb Film And TV Project Ranked From Worst To Best
8. Magicians
This 2007 release is the only film with Mitchell and Webb as the leads, and was written by Jesse Armstrong and Sam Bain, the writers of Peep Show. The movie is a rollercoaster story of the reunification of a stage magic partnership following a comical cheating scandal between Webb’s Karl Allen and the wife of Mitchell’s character Harry Kane (no, not that one). Matters are complicated further by the death of Kane’s wife in a guillotine accident.
Mitchell and Webb’s performances and natural chemistry are cited as the best elements of the film, even by those who weren’t particularly glowing about the film itself.
The film was more loved by general viewers than critics, with the plain TV-like presentation style from director Andrew O’Connor bearing the brunt of criticism. On reflection, this is clearly a film with more good points than bad, and may have been a victim of the unrealistic expectations created by the success of Peep Show and a cross-section of viewers who were not happy to accept anything but a film adaptation of the show.
