The Mitchell and Webb Situation was a 2001 sketch show project, in which the pair attempted to bounce back from the relative failure of Bruiser. With the BBC now more cautious on Mitchell and Webb, the series aired on the now defunct music and comedy TV station Play UK, a fact bemoaned in more recent times by David Mitchell.

Fans of That Mitchell and Webb Look will notice a number of similarities between the two projects, in more than just name. The format is very similar, with the characters of Sir Digby Chicken Caesar and Ginger being influenced by the tramps used in a running end credits gag from The Mitchell and Webb Situation.

The show wasn’t perfect, with a number of recurring sketches that fall flat, but it would revive the fortunes of the partnership, and was rebroadcast on the BBC in 2008 under the name That Mitchell and Webb Situation, following the early success of That Mitchell and Webb Look.
