Every Mitchell And Webb Film And TV Project Ranked From Worst To Best

4. Upstart Crow

David Mitchell is clearly having the time of his life in this BBC historical sitcom based on the life and times of William Shakespeare. The writing is incredibly clever and crafted with a great love for classic British sitcoms, with responsibly used references to the likes of Blackadder and The Office a common theme.

Mitchell is perfectly cast in the central role, his ability to speak eloquently in massive tangents or carefully crafted solo rants gels really well with the Shakespeare character presented in Upstart Crow.

Almost universally lauded by critics, we remain unsure if a fourth series will be commissioned, but the brilliant 2020 Christmas special, with its smart decision to address the pandemic of 2020 with reference to the plague of Shakespeare’s time may just have tipped the scales in favour of at least one more run for the show. There was a stage adaptation of the show, fronted by Mitchell, that had the misfortune of opening in February 2020, just before theatres were shut down in the UK as part of a nationwide lockdown.
