Every Movie Role Tom Hanks Turned Down!

8. Jack - Jack Powell

Tom Hanks Batman
Buena Vista Pictures

Another role Hanks was seen as the number one choice for was a part oddly similar to one he'd already played before: that of what appears to be a child trapped inside of a man's body.

It was actually Hanks' performance in Penny Marshall's Big which made him director Francis Ford Coppola's first choice for the role of Jack Powell in his 1996 feature about a boy who ages four-times faster than usual. However, the actor clearly didn't feel like retreading old ground by playing a similar role again. So, this meant that Robin Williams was eventually brought in to play the lead in Jack. Strangely enough, Williams was also one of the names passed up on when it came to casting Hanks' role of Josh Baskin in Big.

Unfortunately though, Jack was seen as an underwhelming letdown when compared to the universally adored Big, with many critics seeing the feature as a disappointing waste of the seriously talented names involved.

This made Hank's decision to dodge this particular project look like an extremely wise move in hindsight.
