How do you rate a movie that's both awesome and awful at the same time? Neil LaBute's remake of the 1973 horror classic is an absolute failure of intent as a serious-minded thriller, but as a top-shelf laugh riot of Nicolas Cage's filmography? It's ludicrously entertaining.

Cage, who gives a feat of overacting for the ages, has claimed in recent years that he knew exactly what he was doing, and whether you believe that or not, his swinging-for-the-fences performance is a work of demented beauty.

This is a film where Cage runs around in a bear suit repeatedly punching women in the face, where he forces an unarmed woman to dismount from her bicycle at gunpoint, and where he screams "Ahhhh! Not the bees!!!" before bees are funnelled into a mask he's forced to wear.

It's too amusing and weird to be truly worthless, and it's been successfully re-shaped into a bizarro comedy in recent years, even if it's understandable that audiences anticipating a straight-up genre film had no idea how to process it.
