4. Bug (2006)

Trust William Friedkin (The Exorcist) of all filmmakers to deliver a psychological horror film so offputting mainstream audiences near-universally despised it.

While Bug may not be for everyone, it is a suitably disturbing, Kafka-esque horror film about a woman (Ashley Judd, back again) shacking up with a possibly delusional man (Michael Shannon) who believes their motel room is infested with bugs.

Judd and Shannon are both fantastic here, and Friedkin's tight direction helps underline the overwhelming, skin-crawling sense of paranoia and unease.

The general public loathed it for being different, but it's endured just fine as a cult classic ever since, and actually managed to double its tiny $4 million budget at the box office. Nice.
