Every Philip Seymour Hoffman Movie Ranked Worst To Best
7. Scotty - Boogie Nights (1997)
Hoffman's career really kicked off here. After turning heads with his excellent cameo in Hard Eight, he found himself cast in P. T. Anderson's dark and visceral drama about the 70s porn industry.
Alongside the likes of Mark Wahlberg, Burt Reynolds, Julianne Moore and Heather Graham, Hoffman shines as Scotty, a gay boom operator who falls desperately in love with Wahlberg's Dirk Diggler.
Boogie Nights is a sublime period drama sporting a typically packed ensemble for an Anderson-directed project, and though he could easily have been left in the dust by the actors around him, Hoffman managed to make himself known and give a performance as tragic as it is hilarious.
