It's fitting that one of Pixar's most emotionally charged movies to date boasts one of its most viscerally blood-boiling villains in Ernesto de la Cruz (Benjamin Bratt).

A classic twist villain, Ernesto is initially presented as a beloved musician idolised by protagonist Miguel (Anthony Gonzalez), but later it's revealed that he actually murdered his more talented music partner Héctor (Gael García Bernal) after he decided to return home to his family.

Ernesto then passed all of Héctor's music off as his own in order to become famous, ensuring that he's one of the cruellest and most insidiously selfish Pixar villains we've ever seen.

He certainly gets his posthumous comeuppance, though: his duplicity revealed as he fades into obscurity and Héctor's legacy is rightly restored.
