Every R-Rated DC Movie Ranked From Worst To Best

4. Watchmen

Watchmen Killing Joke
Warner Brothers

Depending on who you ask, Zack Snyder's Watchmen is either a groundbreaking masterpiece of comic book cinema, or an absolute disaster of a film that single-handedly tarnishes the name of the iconic Alan Moore graphic novel.

The truth of the matter, however, is that Watchmen is a solid, if a bit flawed superhero film that gets its point across in a way that is (mostly) rather entertaining.

For instance, in spite of how much of the book had to be left out, the Watchmen film still definitely managed to hit the key notes of Alan Moore's dark superhero tale that is ripe with sociopolitical commentary and forces its characters to seriously call their own morality into question.

The main cast do an exceptional job with their roles, especially Malin Ã…kerman and Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Silk Spectre II and the Comedian, respectively. However, it's Jackie Earle Haley who absolutely steals the show with his vivid portrayal of the deranged vigilante Rorschach.

That being said, the supporting cast could also feel rather wooden at times, which is largely due to the fact that the film could be a just little too melodramatic for its own good. Also, some of the visuals didn't really work, the blue light aesthetic was somewhat relentless, and let's not forget that painfully awkward and drawn-out sex scene.

For all its positives and negatives, Watchmen is a film that effectively gets it right down the middle. And, all things, considered, there are worse ways to adapt a popular Alan Moore book. (We did just talk about The Killing Joke, after all.)
