5. Batman: Gotham By Gaslight

Watchmen Killing Joke
Warner Bros. Home Entertainment

Batman: Gotham by Gaslight is an interesting take on the Dark Knight, to say the very least. Set in a Victorian-era Gotham City and based on the graphic novel of the same name, Gotham by Gaslight revolves around Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle as they attempt to catch infamous serial killer Jack the Ripper.

While the Gotham by Gaslight's budget definitely took a hit to secure the R rating, the film mostly makes up for this with the great use it makes of its this unique premise, most notably through some great stylization and a fantastic, era-appropriate score. In addition, the voice cast does a fantastic job and there are some great action set pieces on display.

With that said, however, while The Killing Joke is a film that tried way too hard to justify its R rating, Gotham by Gaslight is a film that really didn't try hard enough. In fact, given the subject matter at hand, it did genuinely feel as though the film was pulling its punches at times.

Also, while the final revelation in relation to the infamous killer's identity was certainly both very bold and very interesting, the fact that it somewhat betrays the reputation of one of Batman's most famous characters likely won't sit well with some.

It didn't quite live up to its potential or even its R rating for the most part, but at the end of the day, Batman: Gotham by Gaslight is still a creative and enjoyable take on the titular hero.
