Every Resident Evil Movie Ranked From Worst To Best

3. Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City

Without question the most disappointing of all seven Resident Evil movies to date, the recently released reboot Welcome to Raccoon City was presented as a slate-cleaning reimagining that would be much more faithful to the games.

And while that is objectively true, the film ultimately fails to compellingly adapt the first two games to the big screen.

Given its low $25 million budget, trying to cram two games' worth of story and characters into a single movie was a bold but misguided idea, such that Welcome to Raccoon City often feels more like a lazy exercise in shallow fan-service than a genuinely tense horror film.

Kaya Scodelario certainly delivers as Claire Redfield, but she's helpless against the unstoppable tide of awful dialogue, embarrassing references to the games, horrendous visual effects, and a general feeling of listlessness.

It certainly looks like Resident Evil - which already makes it better than most of the Anderson movies - but the authenticity is purely surface-level.

The soul of the source material is still largely absent, and so it's little surprise the film has been a critical and commercial failure.

No doubt another reboot movie will be announced within a year or two.
