Every Ridley Scott Movie Ranked Worst To Best

1. The Martian (2015)

It may be a controversial choice for some, but The Martian is absolutely Ridley Scott's best film.

It might be completely different to sci-fi icons Alien and Blade Runner, but The Martian is a triumph of human propaganda, which - rather unthinkably - was classed as a risk when it was first released. A lot of that was down to Scott's work heading into 2015, which had been patchy at best for the most part.

In the end, The Martian was everything the world needed in what felt like a bleak time (how naive we all were), offering a fun, uplifting experience with a soundtrack the Guardians Of The Galaxy would be envious of and a spell-binding, charming single-man performance by Matt Damon that is the pinnacle of his career.

Incredibly for a movie with such a grim premise, the film is funny and plays out like a potted history of human evolution, offering a light take on impenetrably dark material that makes its conclusion even more satisfying than if we'd watched Damon tossed around like a rag-doll in Martian sand storms for two hours.

To get a gem like this out of the story - and without a really big hit in almost a decade was absolutely stunning work by Scott.
