Every Scream Movie Ranked Worst To Best

1. Scream (1996)

Scream VI

No drumroll required. For all the hits the Scream franchise has produced, it will never be able to top the original. To its credit, it's always been aware this 1996 masterpiece was its peak.

From the minds of Kevin Williamson and Wes Craven, Scream took everything that made the slasher genre tick -- the endearing teen characters, the last-minute twists, the killer reveals and rules to survival -- and used it to its advantage, leaning on audience expectation to create a familiar but refreshing horror.

Equal parts funny and genuinely terrifying, Scream opens with Drew Barrymore being asked to name her favourite scary movie, and ends with a gripping showdown that the franchise has never bested since. From start to finish, it never pauses to take a breath, and remains an intensely re-watchable classic.

Take Neve Campbell's endearing portrayal of the haunted Sidney Prescott, Roger L. Jackson's menacing Ghostface voice, its iconic cold open and its ingenious horror movie references, there's simply no Scream better, and there probably never will be.
