6. Hannibal

The Godfather 2 Al Pacino
MGM

The Silence Of The Lambs is a dark masterpiece that introduced the world to Anthony Hopkins's eloquent psychopath Hannibal Lector, who instantly established himself as one of the most memorable movie villains of his generation.

The film's sequel Hannibal was years in the making since author Thomas Harris took his sweet time delivering the book it would be based on. It finally arrived in 2006 and was adapted for the big screen by Ridley Scott the following year.

Hannibal exceeded the box office feats of its predecessor but fell short of garnering the same critical acclaim. It's easy to see why this was the case. For all of the movie's visual splendour and unsettling depravity, at times it's just plain dull.

Hopkins is once again outstanding in the lead role, backed by a strong supporting cast headed up by Julianne Moore and Gary Oldman, but it's the flaws carried over from the novel which prevented Hannibal from hitting the heights of its predecessor, namely its pacing issues and a botched final act that plumetted into distaste.
