Every Sequel To Best Picture Oscar Winners - Ranked

5. They Call Me Mister Tibbs!

The Godfather 2 Al Pacino
Mirisch Productions

Few films reflect US zeitgeist at the time of the Civil Rights movement like In the Heat of the Night, in which the great Sidney Poitier debuted as Detective Virgil Tibbs.

It won five Oscars in 1968, including Best Picture, and Poitier would go on to reprise the lead role in two sequels. First up was They Call Me Mister Tibbs in 1970.

Although Poitier was once again roundly praised for his performance in the follow-up, and the second sequel The Organization, director Norman Jewison did not return to the series, nor did his writing team and the dip in quality was plain to see.

They Call Me Mister Tibbs is a solid, well-acted detective story but it fell far short of the standards set by In the Heat of the Night.
