Every Single MCU Film Ranked From Worst To Best
6. Thor: Ragnarok
There will be some cynical people who complain that Thor: Ragnarok is both too funny and too frivolous to really be considered good, but there is a far more organic feel to the tone - thanks to Taika Waititi directing - that marks a stark contrast with how the MCU traditionally does comedy.
Instead of shoe-horned gags that can be distracting, Ragnarok is a comedy at its heart with dramatic moments on top. It almost feels like a coming-of-age comedy (in that it follows Thor's journey to discovering what it really means to be "worthy") with nods in its genetics to the likes of Withnail & I and Planes, Trains & Automobiles.
It's nothing like any other MCU movie, thanks to how much scope Taika Waititi has to explore his own sense of humour and taste (though he is kept slightly on a leash by the wider agenda of the franchise). And it's hysterical, with good stakes, great new characters and a joyful sense of fun that seemed impossible given its proximity to Infinity War. Perhaps because of the decision to avoid that narrative, the stand-alone stands apart as en energetic, enjoyable frolic with meaningful drama.
