Every Sofia Coppola Film Ranked Worst To Best

7. The Bling Ring (2013)

Based on the exploits of the real-life gang known as the Bling Ring, Sofia Coppola's fifth film tackles its subject matter with striking visuals and beautiful cinematography, and a clever grasp of dark humour.

Starring Emma Watson, Katie Chang, Taissa Farmiga and Israel Broussard, the crime-comedy details the behind-the-scenes exploits of a group of teenagers who used elaborate ploys to burgle the homes of their favourite celebrities.

The film is beautifully shot and Watson in particular shines as the morally flawed Nicki Moore (based on Bling Ring member Alexis Neiers), though does suffer later in its runtime from an inability to really dig into the motives of the gang or the aftermath of their crime spree.

It works then in the way many stylish true-life films play out, in that whilst its well filmed and very funny, it refuses to look under the surface of the titular gang's crimes and shallow view of the world.

I get to write about what I love, so that's pretty cool. Every great film should seem new every time you see it. Be excellent to each other.
