Every Sofia Coppola Film Ranked Worst To Best
5. Marie Antoinette (2006)
Marie Antionette remains a unique animal in the world of historical biopics. Highly stylish and modernised, the drama traces the life of the young titular queen in the days leading up to the French Revolution, and with Kirsten Dunst's inspired lead performance and the modern soundtrack, it packs one hell of a punch.
Despite the historical inaccuracies - all, according to Coppola, purposefully put in to create more of an "interpretation" of Antoinette's life - the style, humour and tragic narrative make the film both a daring exercise in filmmaking and a genuinely riveting look into a fraught area of French history.
The costumes, set pieces and general atmosphere keep Marie Antoinette afloat even during its briefly slow moments, and the political satire of the main story works wonders to balance the film's more dramatic beats with a dry sense of humour only Coppola could conjure up with such subject matter.
