Every Sofia Coppola Film Ranked Worst To Best
4. Somewhere (2010)
Without question the most underrated film of Sofia Coppola's career, Somewhere is often cited as the director's most self-indulgent. It's the portrait of a famous actor (Stephen Dorff) who seems to have it all, but is trapped inside a mid-life crisis and forced to care for his young daughter (Elle Fanning) during his existential stint at the Chateau Marmont.
Despite featuring many of the same themes found in Lost in Translation, Somewhere is able to work brilliantly on its own, with its own characters, setting, and tone. Dorff is excellent as unprepared father and celebrity Johnny Marco, and Coppola is able to make him both sympathetic and the focal point of her satirical look at Hollywood and the idea of the "celebrity."
Beside this, the drama is also an affecting portrait of rocky father-daughter relationship. It's an emotional ride if you're willing to take the journey, beautifully shot and socially aware, and despite its detractors remains a truly fantastic addition to Coppola's small but inspired filmography.
