One of our biggest beefs with The Amazing Spider-Man was that it crawled up near-identical walls to the first Tobey Maguire movie, and its villain personifies this problem.

Spidey fans were forced to wait an entire decade to see Doctor Curt Connors turn into his reptilian alter ego on screen, with the transformation teased by the presence of Dylan Baker’s version of the character throughout the Sam Raimi era.

When it finally happened in Marc Webb's reboot, it was an anti-climax since Rhys Ifans's Lizard did little to distinguish himself from the villains of the Maguire era.

There were overtones of both Norman Osborn and Otto Octavius in there as the character completed his journey from mentor to monster and back again.

The inability to differentiate was both The Lizard and Amazing Spider-Man biggest failing, and Marvel Studios appears to have heeded lessons from this misstep with Homecoming, which resisted the temptation to retread old ground.
