Thomas Haden Church’s Flint Marco has all the makings of an effective villain - awesome shapeshifting powers, a sympathetic backstory involving a sick daughter and an origin that intertwines with that of the hero's.

In some respects, Sandman is punching above his weight in Spider-Man 3, given that he's something of a B-list bad guy in the comic books, albeit one with a rich history.

However, he falls short of on-screen greatness because the movie was unable to offer him enough prevalence for that. Sam Raimi's biggest mistake was opting for three villains and then failing to decide which one was most worthy of the spotlight.
