Every Spider-Man Movie Villain Ranked From Worst To Best

3. Norman Osborn (Spider-Man)

Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy didn't quite perfect the villain formula at the first attempt, but it came laudably close with Willem Dafoe's madcap Green Goblin.

Norman Osborn's decent into madness and villainy was told with more pathos than in the comics, since Peter Parker's mentor is ultimately portrayed as a good man who treats the protagonist like a son before darkness takes him.

Dafoe rises to the challenge a Jekyll and Hyde character presents, delivering subtly different mannerisms in Goblin mode and bringing fervour to an Osborn in turmoil.

This is a villain who plays an emotional tug-of-war with both Spider-Man and the audience alike, and he actually convinces us to root for him during his internal battle... up to a point, at least.

The only real issue is his overzealous delivery, which at times see him glide precariously close to pantomime villain territory. That, and the fact his costume has aged so poorly that it wouldn't look out of place in a pantomime.
