Every Spike Lee Movie Ranked Worst To Best

19. Miracle At St. Anna (2008)

Do The Right Thing
Disney

Miracle At St Anna was made in a response to Hollywood's trend of underselling the contributions of Black soldiers throughout America's long and bloody history.

Unfortunately - despite his heart being in the right place - Lee's attempt to make an epic war movie paying tribute to WWII's African-American heroes (including Derek Luke, Omar Benson and Michael Ealy) is a bombastic mess of a movie, relying heavily on overly-sentimental war movie clichés and tense but haphazard battle sequences.

There's a lot happening in the film, and very little of it gives way to the necessary balance of action and characterisation it so noticeably lacks. Lee deserves credit for trying something so expansive, sure, but Miracle At St Anna is still a disappointing misfire.
