Every Star Trek Movie Ranked From Worst To Best
3. Star Trek Beyond (2016)
Despite the terrible marketing campaign that started with a controversially toned first trailer and ended with a ridiculous, unnecessary spoiler on the eve of release, Star Trek Beyond is a surprising triumph.
There may be a lot of action - prompting some of the same accusations levelled at Nemesis that it's not a true Star Trek film - but there is a stronger spirit of the Original Series in there and the story is very compelling. It might be another revenge plot (which the Kelvin Timeline clearly digs), but the idea of an old warrior balking at the Federation's eternal quest for peace is a great launching point.
There are issues, sure - like Elba's performance being muddled and lost - but Justin Lin actually brought more of Star Trek to his film than JJ Abrams did (perhaps because he was slightly more free from expectations to reinvent). And even the silliest moments (like the Beastie Boys' narrative importance) work perfectly.
If a film's success should be judged in how much it wants you see more, then count this as a resounding victory.
