Every Star Wars Movie Ranked From Worst To Best

7. Solo

Solo A Star Wars Story Han Chewbacca
Lucasfilm

A Han Solo movie was already a questionable project, since it wasn’t a story many thought worth telling, when trouble hit: Phil Lord and Christopher Miller were fired from the movie, despite having shot over 80% of it, with Ron Howard brought in to oversee the end of the production in July 2017. That ballooned to Howard reshooting around 3/4 of the movie, and still needing to hit the May 2018 release date.

It’s a feat, then, that Solo is a rollicking ride and a good time at the cinema. It may not have Harrison Ford, but Alden Ehrenreich proves the doubters wrong and proves himself to be a great fit for young Han: charming, cocky, but with a big heart and an earnestness that makes him more relatable than the character’s ever been before.

The movie does take too long to really get going, sputtering to a start a bit like the Millennium Falcon itself but, like the ol’ hunk of junk, once it gets going it tends to absolutely soar past. A few characters are wasted because of that pacing, Emilia Clarke doesn’t give a great performance, and there are a couple of moments of fan-service - one small, one big - that are very questionable.

Overall, though, it’s a thoroughly entertaining heist flick, filled with solid turns for some of Star Wars’ best characters - Lando and especially Chewie are well-served here - and it does its job of telling a good story that deepens our understanding and appreciation of one of the saga’s most important heroes.
