Every Steve McQueen Movie Ranked Worst To Best

5. Hunger (2008)

Steve McQueen's debut Hunger tells the staggering story of the 1981 Irish Hunger Strike from the perspective of IRA member Bobby Sands (Michael Fassbender), who helped lead a dangerous protest against the British government.

Moving slowly but with unwavering intensity, the film is uncompromising and bleak, gloomy and vital, an historical snapshot into the infamous Troubles which perfectly balances the political upheaval of the time with a deeply personal story anchored by Fassbender's phenomenal starring performance.

It's at once a story of an era, but also a vivid look into the life and struggles of one man refusing to back down or betray his beliefs, even for his own safety.

With Hunger, McQueen came out the gate swinging, and although it was his first feature film, it's impossible to watch it without thinking it must have been made by a director on the top of his game, rather than a first-time filmmaker with no big screen experience.
